Project's description

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the High Atlas mountains, this museum is an architecture of subtraction rather than addition. To protect delicate artifacts from the extreme climate and preserve the pristine landscape, the majority of the building is buried underground. The design manifests as a series of geometric fissures in the red earth, where daylight is carefully choreographed to guide visitors through the history of Berber craftsmanship. It uses the earth's thermal mass for passive cooling, blending ancient wisdom with modern preservation standards.

Technical Specifications:

  • Conservation: Galleries rely on passive hygroscopic buffering using clay plaster walls to maintain a constant relative humidity of 50%, essential for preserving textiles.
  • Structure: A post-tensioned concrete roof spans 40 meters without columns, creating an uninterrupted "black box" for immersive exhibitions.
  • Materiality: The exterior cladding is local quartzite, dry-stacked by local masons to blend seamlessly with the geological strata.
